What Happened

Enbridge Inc. has officially begun construction on the Sunrise Expansion Program, a $4 billion natural gas infrastructure project in British Columbia. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Monday, July 20, at a pipeline storage yard in Prince George, marking the start of physical work on the expansion. Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson and B.C. Economic Development Minister Ravi Kahlon attended the event alongside Enbridge CEO Greg Ebel and Lheidli T’enneh First Nation Chief Dolleen Logan. The project involves constructing and operating facility upgrades and modifications along the existing Westcoast pipeline system. This expansion is designed to add approximately 900 million cubic feet per day of natural gas capacity to the network. The upgraded system will transport gas from northeastern B.C. to the Canada-U.S. border near Abbotsford.
